We talked about the cat in one of our Truth and Thoughts series but today we would be looking at another popular creature which is the Dog.
Dogs are known to be man’s favourite or best friend. They are kept at home for pets and other purposes. They are very faithful, loyal, obedient, playful and sometimes stubborn. Dogs have being known to have saved a lot of lives and guarded properties of people.
Their high sense of smell has made them to be used by drug enforcement agencies for tracking of drugs and other substances and they have also been used by military personnel for tracking of criminals, detection of explosives and used for fighting away criminals.
The domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris or Canis familiaris)is a member of genus Canis (canines) that forms part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant carnivore.
Their long association with humans has led dogs to be uniquely attuned to human behavior and they are able to thrive on a starch-rich diet that would be inadequate for other canid species.Dogs vary widely in shape, size and colours.Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, companionship and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This influence on human society has given them the sobriquet “man’s best friend”.
In 14th-century England, hound (from Old English: hund) was the general word for all domestic canines, and dog referred to a subtype of hound, a group including the mastiff. It is believed this “dog” type was so common, it eventually became the prototype of the category “hound”.By the 16th century, dog had become the general word, and hound had begun to refer only to types used for hunting.
A male canine is referred to as a dog, while a female is called a bitch. The father of a litter is called the sire, and the mother is called the dam. An adult male capable of reproduction is a stud.An adult female capable of reproduction is a brood bitch, or brood mother.Immature males or females (that is, animals that are incapable of reproduction) are pups or puppies.A group of pups from the same gestation period is a litter.
Dogs are predators and scavengers, and like many other predatory mammals, the dog has powerful muscles, fused wrist bones, a cardiovascular system that supports both sprinting and endurance, and teeth for catching and tearing.
In our next series,we would now look at the Dog and the family. We would also look at superstitious beliefs attested to this creatures and the truth about them.
